Michael rowed his boat ashore, he had a life but he wanted more
He dreamed a girl in silhouette, he was with her then but they haven’t met
So Michael crossed the river wide, ‘cos you catch a girl like you catch the tide
She would swoon with a need for him, yeah he would battle and he would win
So Michael rowed his boat ashore.
But she didn’t sway no she didn’t swoon, she told him she’d be leaving soon
but as she stood upon the water’s edge she dipped her toe In the things he said, he said
Life it cuts but then it heals, you come alive with the hand it deals
You have to taste all life’s meals to know how a coward, king or peasant feels
And she came alive to it and he came alive to it
These lovers bloom in the poppy fields its all that’s left once the devil steals
To fall in love is such innocence, what’s right is wrong it makes no sense
Now her father said now listen daughter you’ll never marry from across the water
On this account she knew him well, but in Michael's hands her heart had fell
So late one night they slipped away, a secret pact on their wedding day
But they were seen as they left the shore and guns were raised to protect the law
Her father’s aim was one day straight but not with hands fuelled with hate
These lovers stopped and turned about and heard it has the shot rang out
Now Michael rowed his boat ashore, a journey he would make no more
Though the river's wide the route is known, but Michael rowed his boat alone
Michael rowed his boat alone.
Now the people came from miles around, they’d seen their love and they’d heard that sound
They said that life upon this plane, would never be that way again.
